Sugar-based excipients promote long-term IPV release from PLGA microspheres. IPV encapsulated in PLGA microspheres with gelatin (A–B) was released in a strong initial burst. For particles containing sucrose, MSG, and MgCl2 (C–D) or maltodextrin, MSG, and MgCl2 (E–F), a second burst of type 2 IPV was observed around 25–39 days, with very little of types 1 and 3 released after the initial burst. Graphs in B, D, and F show cumulative IPV release.
