Experimental timeline. Male mice were placed on a high fat (HF) diet or control low fat (LF) diet (n = 30 per group). Three months later, mice were subjected a glucose tolerance tests (GTT), allowed to recover, then subjected to right UCCAO (VCI) or sham surgery (n = 15 per group). Three months later GTTs were repeated. Next, behavioral performance was assessed using the open field test, novel object recognition test, Morris water maze, and cued and contextual fear conditioning tests (n = 13–15 per group). Finally, mice received magnetic resonance imaging (n = 7 per group, randomly selected), were perfused and brains collected for histological analysis (n = 7 per group).
