Natural history of post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome (PI-IBS) after shigellosis (A), and sporadic IBS in control subjects (B) over 10 years. Twelve PI-IBS patients and 14 sporadic IBS patients were followed for 10 years. Approximately half the patients recovered from IBS after 5 years, but several patients had persistent IBS symptoms for the duration of the study. The natural history of PI-IBS and sporadic IBS seem to be quite similar.
