Prestarved Müller cells promote RGC survival during mitochondrial inhibition. RGC survival was analysed in cocultures with exposure to antimycin A (10 μM) for 24 hours. During compromised mitochondrial function, the presence of Müller cells had a significant impact on RGC survival when the Müller cells were prestarved ((b); 1.4-fold, ^∗ P < 0.05). The experiment showed no alterations of RGC survival in cocultures with sufficient energy supply (a) nor in cocultures with simultaneous starvation and treatment with antimycin A (c). Bars represent mean values ± SEM of 3–9 experiments. Differences were tested using unpaired two-tailed t-test.
