The approximate boundaries between the thin superficial layer and the transitional layer (curved arrows) as well as between the transitional and deeper radial layers are shown (arrowheads). Note the calcified cartilage (arrow) at the junction of the cartilage and the subchondral bone plate that is still incompletely ossified in this specimen.
