Bilirubin metabolism and transport in the hepatocyte. At the hepatocyte basolateral membrane, unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) dissociates from albumin and is transported into the hepatocyte by OATP. Within the hepatocyte, UCB binds to glutathione-S-transferase and is conjugated by UGT1A1. The unconjugated bilirubin is transported across the canalicular membrane by the apical export pump, MRP2.
