Molecular mechanisms of cholestasis in sepsis. In the setting of sepsis, bile flow is mainly impaired due to changes in bile acid transport. There is a downregulation of the basolateral bile acid transporters, NTCP and OATP and canalicular bile acid transporters, BSEP and MRP2. In addition, localization of transporters to the cell membrane may be disrupted due to changes in microtubules. Reproduced with permission from (75).
