Sections were scored for inflammatory cell infiltration, surface ulceration and necrosis, edema and hyperemia and goblet cell hyperplasia, as follows: 1, <25% damage or active changes; 2, <50% damage or active changes; 3, <75% damage or active changes; and 4, >75% damage or active changes. A total score of <4 indicated minimal inflammatory changes, a score of 4–8 indicated mild inflammatory changes, a score of 9–12 indicated moderate inflammatory changes and a score of 13–16 indicated severe inflammatory changes.
