Heme molecules in HbOCs chemically bind and unbind to O2 at a specific pO2 range, resulting in the sigmoidal relationship between pO2 and O2 content. In contrast, uptake and release of O2 from PFCs is dictated by Henry’s Law, in which the amount of O2 dissolved in PFCs is linearly related to pO2.
