Severe hyperglycemia (>200 mg/dL) was associated with increased mortality in the overall cohort (HR 1.94, 95% CI: 1.63–2.32; P<0.001) and in patients without pre-existing diabetes (HR 2.22, 95% CI: 1.83–2.69; P<0.001) but not in patients with known type 2 diabetes mellitus and in patients admitted for sepsis.
