The relative abundance of genera associated with specific pathways: (A) ammonia assimilation, (B) assimilatory nitrate to nitrite, (C) assimilatory nitrite to ammonium, (D) dissimilatory nitrate to nitrite, (E) denitrification, (F) nitrification, (G) nitrogen fixation, and (H) dissimilatory nitrite to ammonium. For each metagenomic library, we calculated the proportion reads from the individual nitrogen cycle pathway associated with each genera and averaged this across habitat type in order to provide equal weighting to all habitats.
