In the embryo lacking Rax, the expression of Shh (yellow) in the ABasM is abolished, and the formation of mature neurons expressing dorsomedial hypothalamic markers (Pomc, Otp, TH, Sst; blue dots) is also abolished or greatly reduced. At the same time, the expression of ventromedial hypothalamic markers (Fgf10, Otx2, Tbx3, red) extends into dorsomedial territory (arrow).
