V592, VdΔnoxb and VdΔpls1 were inoculated on MM medium overlaid with cellophane membrane for 2 days, followed by cerium chloride treatment for TEM observation. Cerium deposits were detected on the membrane at the tip of penetration peg in V592. Deposits were not detected in either mutant strains of VdΔnoxb and VdΔpls1, in which no penetration pegs developed. Bar = 0.5 μm
