The tetrahedral intermediate in the reaction catalyzed by aspartate transcarbamoylase adopts a 6-membered ring chair-like conformation.56 This conformation enables the phosphate leaving group to serve as a general base, and intermolecular proton transfer facilitates collapse of the tetrahedral intermediate in this example of substrate-assisted catalysis.
