Table 1.

Geometrical parameters and distributions measured in our previous study (6)

Geometries Fiber Type Distribution Type Parameters
Orientation angle Collagen Bimodal normal distribution μC1 = 0.37, σC1 = 0.20, wC1 = 0.22
μC2 = 1.91, σC2 = 0.50, wC2 = 1.0 − wC1
Elastin Bimodal normal distribution μE1 = 0.33, σE1 = 0.20, wE1 = 0.4*
μE2 = 1.99, σE2 = 0.57, wE2 = 1.0 − wE1
Waviness Collagen Beta distribution α1 = 5.01, α2 = 52.67, a = 0.0, b = 4.0
Volume fraction Collagen fC = 33%
Elastin fE = 22%

A recent study found that the minor orientation of elastin was approximately orthometric to the major orientation in each sublayer of adventitia, and some elastin fibers in the minor direction were covered by fibers in the major direction at no-load or low-load states [see Fig. 5 in Chen et al. (6)], suggesting that wE1 was larger than the value (0.19) measured at ZSS.
