Number of sequence entries with unverified taxonomic identities (tagged with ‘unverified’, ‘environ*’, ‘uncultured’ or ‘clone’) is plotted against total number of sequences in the nucleotide database for each marker. Bubble size indicates the number of marker sequences with verified taxonomic identities (tagged with ‘verified’ or ‘voucher’) and colour shows relative taxonomic coverage of the verified sequences. 16S-Eu refers to mitochondrial 16S while 16S-Pro is the prokaryote 16S marker. All GenBank data were retrieved on 23 March 2016.
