To quantitate the presence of each macrophage subset in seven uninfected macaques, three random fields were analyzed and numerical scores of 0, 1, 2, or 3 were assigned. In this scoring system, 0 represented an absence of the macrophage population, 1 indicated a minimal presence (1 ≤ 20 cells), 2 indicated a moderate presence of the macrophages (20 to 100 cells), and 3 indicated the presence of many macrophages in spleen (≥ 100 cells). Data are expressed as means ± SD. Bold text indicates the predominant macrophage subset(s) within each area of spleen.
