Table 2.

Total number of pictures recalled as a function of time horizon condition and picture valence in Experiment 2.

Expansive time horizon condition Control condition Limited time horizon condition

Positive pictures 2.33 (1.28) 2.56 (1.47) 2.55 (0.94)
Negative pictures 2.33 (1.63) 2.49 (1.52) 2.00 (1.56)
Total recall 4.67 (2.35) 5.05 (2.60) 4.55 (2.21)

Note: There were 7 positive and 7 negative pictures, for a total of 14 pictures. Numbers in parentheses represent standard deviations. Of note, recall levels were lower in Experiment 2 than in Experiment 1 because of procedural differences at encoding. Whereas encoding was incidental during Experiment 2 it was intentional during Experiment 1. This change to incidental encoding likely also led to the larger positivity effects in Experiment 2 than in Experiment 1 (see Reed et al., 2014).
