Abbreviations: ARIC, Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities; CI, confidence interval; PWV, pulse wave velocity.

aModels adjusted for age, gender, race-center, heart rate, hypertension, smoking, and body mass index. The indicator variables for center varied by race group given the varying representation at each of the 4 centers.

bFasting glucose (FG) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) criteria: (i) diabetes if FG ≥126mg/dl, or currently taking diabetes medication, or HbA1c ≥6.5%. Among those without diabetes, then (ii) prediabetes if fasting glucose 100–125mg/dl or HbA1c 5.7%–6.4%, and (iii) normal glucose if FG <100mg/dl and HbA1c <5.7%.
