The two graphs in (B) compare the effect of the external medium for the two different particle types. Here, green and red bars refer to the same QD identities as in (A), with lighter colored bars referring to experiments in 3% aqueous acetic acid and darker colored bars representing experiments in water. Each reported value is the sum of the averaged values of cadmium, selenium, zinc, and sulfur measurements from four independent samples. Error bars represent a propagated error expressed as the square root of the sum of the standard deviations for each individual element component.
