Introduction: Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the world with about 1.4 million new cases reported in 2012. In Indonesia the reported incidence in 2008 was about 1.8/100,000 population with 10.3% mortality rate. In order to cope with the problem, prevention and early detection should be done. However, to do that, we should know the profile of colorectal cancer in Indonesia. This study aims to know about the profile of colorectal cancer based on a single centre report.
Methods: A retrospective study from 2013 to 2015 was carried out to determine the incidence of colorectal cancer in patients admitted to the Murni Teguh Memorial Hospital, Medan Indonesia.
Results: Between 2013 to 2015, colorectal cancer was diagnosed in 206 patients. The Incidences were higher in men (55.8%) and the predominant ages are above 50 years (mean 55 ± 11.2). Most of the cases were diagnosed at stage 3 or 4 (76.7% and 13.1%) respectively. The site of the tumors comprises mainly of transverse colon (n = 135, 65.5%), followed by rectal (22.3%) and sigmoid (12.1%). Histopathology showed mainly moderately differentiated (75.7%). Most of the cases were treated with the combination of surgery and chemotherapy (57.3%) and supportive treatment (14.1%). Relapse occurred in 6 patients (2.4%) during the period of study whilst the remaining are clinically stable and are still in the study. The drop-out rate during the period of study was 10.2% and mortality (15.5%) was seen mainly in patients above 50 years old (84%).
Conclusion: This centre with high incidence of colorectal cancer had good prognostic outcome as well as drop out rate during treatment. Thus, early detection and education to increase the awareness of colorectal cancer in the population, especially in older men (above 50 years) should be done.
