Simple representation of a healthy human RBC (a) and its complex membrane structure (b). The equilibrium shape of healthy human RBC is a biconcave disk approximately 8.0 μm in diameter and 2.0 μm in width. Its cell membrane is made of a lipid bilayer reinforced on its inner face by a flexible two-dimensional skeletal protein network. The fluid-mosaic model of the RBC membrane is adapted with permission from Pietzsch (2004)
