R. solanacearum is nested among other known endofungal bacteria and can be found within fungal cells. (a) Phylogenetic analysis of endofungal bacteria based on maximum parsimony analysis of 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequences. The percentage of replicate trees in which the associated taxa clustered together in the bootstrap test (1000 replicates) is shown next to the branches. Branches with <70% support values were collapsed. GenBank accession numbers are listed in Supplementary Table S3. Well-known bacterial species not characterized as endofungal symbionts were inserted for reference and are marked with a red asterisk (*). (b) Confocal laser-scanning microscopy image of GFP-labeled GMI1000 colonizing A. flavus chlamydospore. Scale bar (white) represents 10 um. Z-stack scan can be viewed in Supplementary Video S2.
