Z-rings, cross-membranes, membrane invaginations/vesicles, and protoplasts are illustrated. Peptidoglycan walls (not shown in the scheme) are associated with some of the cross-membranes forming classical septa. Open circles inside compartments represent intact chromosomal DNA, and fragmented circles indicate degraded chromosomal DNA. Membrane discontinuities represent the changes in membrane permeability in dying cells. Red corresponds to PI fluorescence, and green corresponds to SYTO9 or YOPRO1 fluorescence. Arrows indicate dying cells; DNA is fully degraded in these cells during the transition from MI to MII and thus is not stained. FM4-64 labelling is illustrated in red.
