Remotely triggered cytotoxic treatments. (A) Photodynamic therapy, which uses light radiation and a photosensitizer to convert reactive oxygen into a radical oxygen species (ROS) that is used to kill cancerous cells. (B) Photothermal therapy, which uses light radiation and surface plasmon resonance to produce heat from a metallic nanoparticle that is used to kill cancerous cells. (C) Magnetic hyperthermia, which uses magnetic radiation to produce heat from a magnetic nanoparticle that is used to kill cancerous cells.
