(Top) The CITE element (green) is located in the 3′ untranslated region where it can bind a eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF) (in this case, eIF4G associated with eIF4E, both in blue). (Bottom) Base-pairing between a hairpin (HP) in the CITE and a HP near the 5′ end (orange) results in delivery of the factor to the 5′ end, where it can serve in translation initiation along with the 43S complex (shown in dashed gray).
