Mt/N analysis was performed in every participant. ΔmtDNA⁴⁹⁷⁷ was not evaluable in 5 control and 3 thalassemia subjects. Subjects with thalassemia were excluded from analysis incorporating cardiac iron if they had not been evaluated by cardiac MRI or had received regular transfusions for less than 6 years. Subjects were excluded from analysis of glucose metabolism if they had not been evaluated with oral glucose tolerance test or were diagnosed with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
