Absence of factor XIII results in fibrin formation without transglutaminase activity. Whole blood from F13a1+/+ or F13a1−/− mice was perfused over collagen under non-coagulant (A and B) or coagulant (C and D) conditions during 4 min at shear rate of 1000 s−1. Blood samples were pre-incubated with vehicle (control) or K9-DON (100 μM), and post-stained with Rhod-A14. Microscopic images of brightfield and Rhod-A14 fluorescence are shown (bars, 20 μm); also quantification of thrombus size [(% of surface area coverage, (SAC)] and Rhod-A14 fluorescence.
