The first three factors are endogenous: greater mitochondrial content and function, greater O2 consumption and Ca2+ influx, and decreased proton leak, ATP synthase and acidosis. These factors are accompanied by greater electron leakage and resulting mtROS generation. The fourth factor is exogenous, illustrating the egress of Ca2+ and NO influencing the mtROS emission in bystander cells.
