An SDF-1α gradient serves to recruit bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells to the gastric mucosa in response to inflammation. Helicobacter pylori infection induces a Th1 immune response that is characterized by increased IFNγ cytokine production. We hypothesize that Shh signaling mediates IFNγ recruitment of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The increase in production of SDF-1α either by myeloid cells or the gastric epithelium itself may then generate a gradient that allows migration of MSCs to the gastric epithelium and the progression of gastric cancer
