T1-weighted hyperintensity corresponds exactly to the extent of the substantia nigra delineated by myelin staining (luxol fast blue) without overlapping with the adjacent crus cerebri. The ventral hypointense layers visible in T2*-weighted images extended anteriorly to the posterior part of the crus cerebri.
