Leukocytes isolated from diabetic mice (diabetic 2 or 8 months) caused more cytotoxicity to retinal endothelial cells than did leukocytes from age-matched nondiabetic mice. Leukocytes isolated from mice deficient in opsin or containing the P23H mutation caused cytotoxicity to endothelial cells while photoreceptors were present and degenerating (age 2 and 4 months), but not after the photoreceptors were absent (10 months).
