Carotenoid distribution among lipoproteins. Lipoprotein fractions from human serum were separated and endogenous levels of β-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin were measured in each lipoprotein fraction. Carotenoid amounts in each lipoprotein fraction are listed as a percentage of the total amount recovered in all lipoprotein fractions. Total recovery from lipoprotein fractions from the initial amount measured in whole serum was as follows: 110 ± 26% β-carotene, 107 ± 30% lutein, and 113 ± 34% zeaxanthin. Data represent mean ± SD of triplicate separations of lipoprotein fractions.
