RF hard pulses designed with different durations and equal area effect different T2-selectivity of excitation to transverse magnetization Mxy without significantly changing other contrast. This strategy can be used with, for instance, a UTE-type sequence to manipulate T2 contrast without changing echo times. For example, two different pulses can be used for excitation in a three-dimensional centre-out radial imaging sequence that collects two gradient echoes have amplitudes a1 and a2 and durations p1 and p2 that are proportionate such that the area of the pulses are equal.
