Plasminogen activator inhibitor‐1 (PAI‐1) regulates cytokine production during pneumonic plague. Forty‐eight hours after inoculation with phosphate‐buffered saline (mock), 104 colony‐forming units (CFUs) of Yersinia pestis, or 104 CFUs of Y. pestispla, the levels of the indicated cytokines present in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of C57BL/6 or C57BL/6 PAI‐1 −/− mice were assessed by cytometric bead array. Data from two or three independent experiments are combined (n = 10–15 for each group); error bars represent standard errors of the mean. One‐way anova with Bonferroni's multiple comparison test was used to determine significance (*P ≤ 0.05; **P ≤ 0.01; ***P ≤ 0.001). IFN, interferon; IL, interleukin; MCP‐1, monocyte chemoattractant protein‐1; NS, not significant; TNF, tumor necrosis factor.
