Z-VAD-FMK administration abrogated burn-induced cell apoptosis and skeletal muscle atrophy. After injury, burn rats were intraperitoneally injected with PBS or Z-VAD-FMK. At 3 d and 7 d after injection, tibialis anterior muscle samples were collected (n=5 in each group). Tibialis anterior muscle cell apoptosis was analyzed using TUNEL staining at the indicated times, and images (A) were taken using an inverted microscope (200×). Quantitative analysis of cell apoptosis was carried out (B), and the asterisk (*) indicates a significant difference (p<0.05) compared with the PBS group. These data indicated that cell apoptosis was inhibited after Z-VAD-FMK injection. Tibialis anterior muscle weights and body weights were measured, and the tibialis anterior muscle weight/body weight ratio was calculated. The ratio was significantly increased after Z-VAD-FMK injection. The asterisk (*) indicates a significant difference (p<0.05) (C).
