Pretreatability and digestibility of the shoot biomass harvested at senescent stage from extracellular ferritin-overexpressing (FerEX) and control Arabidopsis plants. The plants were irrigated with 2 mM Fe-EDDHA twice a week during plant growth. a Glucose and b xylose release after hot-water pretreatment (180 °C, 17.5 min) and enzyme saccharification with CTec2. EV: empty vector control plant. FerEX(1) and (2) represent transgenic lines FerEX-8a and -10g, respectively. As a comparison, the two previously generated intracellular ferritin-overexpressing (FerIN-2a and -4b) transgenic Arabidopsis plants were also grown, harvested, and pretreated side by side with the FerEX plants. Data are presented as the mean (±SE) of five replicates. * indicates statistical significance of p < 0.05; ** indicates statistical significance of p < 0.01
