Table I. Transition of the SAM from vegetative to reproductive growth in maize.

Developmental stage (according to Abendroth et al., 2011) and time points (indicated in DAS) of the SAM transition were determined in 29 inbred lines (www.maizegdb.org). Two inbred lines from Argentina and two moderate U.S. dent lines (in boldface) showing strong differences in the SAM transition were selected for transcriptome analyses. Seeds were obtained from the stock center except for B73 (Rgbg.) and A188 (Rgbg.), originating from plants that were grown for 10 years exclusively in the greenhouse in Regensburg.
