In Panels A and B, the standard deviations are of the risk-adjusted measures and are empirical-Bayes-adjusted to account for measurement error (see Appendix Section C.3.1). In Panel D, the number of hospitals differs across conditions even though the patient survey metric is not condition-specific because we calculate the ratings on the subset of hospitals that reported at least 1 patient with the condition in 2008.
