At 24 h postfertilization (hpf), fan/wdr43 mutants exhibit distinct craniofacial defects, hydrocephaly, and tail phenotypes (A, B) as compared with age-matched wild-type (WT) siblings (C, D). At 48 hpf, fan/wdr43 mutants, stained with benzidine to reveal hemoglobin, exhibit even more dramatic craniofacial and tail defects as well as heart edema (E, F) as compared with age-matched WT siblings (G, H).
