Modification of astrocytic glucose dynamics by BHB. Under normal conditions glucose enters astrocytes where a fraction is metabolized to lactate. During ketosis, BHB is efficiently metabolized by mitochondria and astrocytic glycolysis becomes inhibited. This increases the availability of glucose to neurons and reduces their exposure to lactate.
