The HCC region not killed by combination treatment of L-HAL and TPZ has dual blood supply from HA and PV. (A) The HCC-bearing HBx transgenic mouse (HTHM12) was treated with transient L-HAL and TPZ (3 mg/kg), which was killed at day 7 after treatment and the liver was collected for histopathologic examination. The gross appearance and overall H&E staining showed ∼90% of the tumor to be near-complete necrosis but ∼10% of the tumor remained alive (green dashed lines indicate the border between necrotic and nonnecrotic tumor regions; black dashed lines indicate the boundary of the tumor region viable after treatment). Several areas at the boundary were demonstrated in a higher magnification manner in Insets. There contains typical portal triad structure in the alive tumor region (marked by blue squares). (B) The tissue sections for the alive tumor region were processed to immunohistochemistry staining with cytokeratin 19 (CK19). As a marker for the bile duct cells in the portal triad structure, the positive signal of CK19 (marked in green arrows) supported the dual blood supply for the minor alive tumor region.
