Time dependence of translation inhibition by CHL or LZD. Antibiotic hypersusceptible E. coli cells growing in defined medium lacking methionine were exposed to a 100-fold excess over the minimal inhibitory concentration of the drugs for varying time periods before addition of l-[³⁵S]methionine. After 1 min of addition of methionine, the incorporation of radioactivity into the trichloracetic acid-precipitable material was determined by scintillation counting.
