HOMO (left) and LUMO (right) isosurfaces for: a) 4 a, and b) 5. The stronger distortion of the orbitals across the bridging bond between parent compound and donor group in the case of 5 relative to 4 a reduces the dipole strength of the HOMO–LUMO transition in the former case and leads to a lower overall attenuation coefficient.
