An overview of the chemical transformations in the Fe-O system, that results in the formation of core|shell particles. Reduction of Fe occurs during the synthesis in the presence of reducing agents e.g. CO at high temperatures. Oxidation occurs in post synthesis workup under aerobic conditions. Transformations from metastable phases (Fe1−xO and γ-Fe2O3) are shown by downward arrows.
