During HW formation, the source of the carbon skeleton is delivered by breaking down mainly Suc, channeled downstream to the shikimate pathway, and finally to the pinosylvin biosynthesis pathway. The upstream and downstream pathways of the pinosylvin biosynthesis were highly up-regulated during HW formation, suggesting that the HW extractive was synthesized in the TZ. In addition, lignin biosynthesis-related transcripts are expressed during HW formation, indicating that lignification of cell wall ray parenchyma cells was taking place in the TZ.
