Primary cases: knees with radiographic and pain progression (group 1). Controls: knees with radiographic but not pain progression (group 2), knees with symptomatic but not radiographic progression (group 3), and knees without radiographic or symptomatic progression (group 4).

Values are mean ± standard deviation unless otherwise indicated.

^

based on pain frequency status in the past year: Frequent pain defined as ‘pain, aching or stiffness in or around the knee on most days for ≥one month during the past 12 months’; Infrequent pain defined as the above symptoms but at any time in the past 12 months (not on most days for ≥one month).

#

used medication for pain, aching or stiffness during previous 12 months for either knee.

*

p values represent comparisons between the primary pre-specified analysis groups (cases: group 1; controls: group 2, 3, 4) using independent samples t-tests unless indicated otherwise.

chi-squared tests for data in contingency tables.

Mann-Whitney U-test as data not normally distributed.

KLG, Kellgren Lawrence grade; JSN, joint space narrowing; N, Newtons; WOMAC, Western Ontario McMasters Osteoarthritis Index.
