Infection with MVA induces cell death in macrophages independent of Mcl-1 deficiency (a and b), but is enhanced when Bcl-XL is absent (c and d). On day 7 of differentiation, macrophages wt, Mcl-1−/− (a and b) or wt, Bcl-XL−/− (c and d) were infected with MVA (MOI=10) for 16 h. Cell death was measured as the percentage of cells positive for PI (a and c) and apoptosis induction as the percentage of cells positive for active caspase-3 (b and d) by flow cytometry.
