Infection with VACV or MCMV leads to enhanced cell death in Bcl-XL−/− macrophages but Mcl-1−/− macrophages are similarly or less sensitive to apoptosis compared with wt. On day 7 of differentiation, macrophages wt or Mcl-1−/− (a and c) or wt or Bcl-XL−/− (b and d) were infected with VACV for 16 h (MOI=10) (a and b) or MCMV for 24 h (MOI=5 or 10) (c and d). Cell death was measured as the percentage of cells stained positive for the Far Red dye of the Dead Cell Stain Kit.
