Ventilation patterns of the sandfish below and above sand. Exhalation is given as negative mV, whereas inhalation is given as positive mV. A comparison of the two significantly different respiration cycles shows that the first exhalation is 60% more intense below sand. The following inhalation is twice as long below sand. In total, the two cycles both last between 24 and 30 breaths min–1, excluding the resting period. The overall breathing frequency is approximately 15 breaths min−1 in both environments.
